Cranswick's climate change action validated as it works across its sausage-making supply chain

Hull meat giant Cranswick has had its environmental credentials approved as it brings operational emissions in line with the Paris Agreement’s most ambitious goals.

The FTSE-listed pork specialist, which has farm-to-fork interests as it supplies major supermarkets and food service operators, has had its 2030 plan to reduce greenhouse gas output by 50 per cent validated by the The Science Based Targets initiative.

It would be a 1.5 degree aligned as it looks to hit Net Zero by 2040.

The commitment forms part of a Second Nature sustainability strategy for the £1.9 billion turnover firm that has almost 13,000 employees.

Of the 16 sites it operates, nine have been certified carbon neutral, with a 59 per cent reduction in emissions in the past five years.

It has removed 1,500 tonnes of plastic, increased recycled content of that used by 80 per cent, with all facilities powered by renewable-sourced electricity.

Cranswick is also a champion of a target to halve edible food waste.

While soil health for animal feed and the feed itself has been changed, with commitments to zero deforestation, Adam Couch, chief executive, is also looking at the supply chain.

It includes purchased goods and services and upstream leased assets, with the aim to also reduce emissions by 50 per cent per tonne sold within the same time frame.

Mr Couch said: “As we transition to halve our emissions by 2030 and reach Net Zero by 2040, we are taking a truly integrated approach to tackling the climate crisis. We have purposely set ourselves the toughest target on Scope 3 (supply chain) because we know we must work collaboratively, and we cannot do this alone.”
