Crane drama as massive load dangles over Glasgow street after chain snaps

Dramatic pictures have captured the moment a construction site load dangles over a Glasgow road after a supporting chain snapped.

The incident took place at the under-construction Moxy Hotel and Courtyard by Marriot on Stobcross Street near the SSE Hydro earlier this afternoon.

One eyewitness looked up when she heard a load snapping noise as one of the two supporting chains broke as the load was being maneuvered over her head.

The crane operator on top of the 243-room structure stopped the operation to allow the load to settle before gingerly moving it towards the safety of the hotel roof where an investigation began.

The £400m development, run by construction firm Robertson, is due to be completed by July next year.

The company have suspended lifting operations while they look into what caused the issue.

Luckily nobody was injured during the incident.

A spokesperson for Robertson   said: “We are aware of an incident at our site in Glasgow’s Stobcross Street involving a chain becoming separated from a lifting beam.

"Everyone at Robertson takes safety extremely seriously and we can confirm that there were no injuries and that we are now looking into the cause of the issue. All similar lifting operations have been suspended until our enquiries are complete.”
