Craigyhill: Watch as huge bonfire in Larne comes down on the Eleventh Night

The bonfire labelled the "biggest ever in Northern Ireland" in the lead up to The Twelfth came down on Sunday night.

The Craigyhill bonfire in Larne stood at an impressive 288 pallets high and gained international attention over the last week.

The bonfire at Ballycraigy in Antrim was then said to have beat the world record of theCraigyhill bonfire, believed to have been 300 pallets high.

The huge effort seen over 60 people work hard for five weeks in order to build it, after a year of planning and fundraising to put it together.

The Larne bonfire builders say they are already planning to beat the world record next year.

The bonfire in the Craigyhill estate has always been known for being particularly large, however this year the community beat the previous record held by Lanark Way bonfire which reached 233 pallets high.

Around 160 bonfires were ignited for the Twelfth of July as part of traditional Eleventh Night celebrations.

The most contentious bonfire this year was the one erected by loyalists at Tiger’s Bay in North Belfast, close to an interface with the nationalist New Lodge area.

Two Stormont ministers, the SDLP’s Nicola Mallon and Sinn Fein’s Deirdre Hargey, launched an unsuccessful legal bid to force police to assist in removing the bonfire.
