Craigyhill Bonfire builders say 'safety is our top priority' following concerns

A group of bonfire builders in Larne have said that safety is their top priority following concerns over how they build their structure.

The Craigyhill Bonfire builders are attempting to break the world record for the largest bonfire this year with their pyre.

The team have been planning the structure for a year and it will consist of tens of thousands of pallets as they hope to build a bonfire taller than 198ft.

However, there have been some concerns regarding the safety of the bonfire and those building it after a video circulated online showing pallets being passed from the bottom to the top of it.

Speaking to Belfast Live, bonfire builder David said the safety of the bonfire and its builders is the team's top priority and he highlighted the measures they have in place to ensure everyone's protection.

He said: "The safety of those working at the bonfire site is our top priority and we are doing everything that we can to make sure that nobody is being put at risk.

"Everyone who is going up the bonfire is equipped with one of our 15 harnesses which are anchored to the centre of the bonfire. This makes sure that everyone working on the bonfire at a height is safe from any dangers and nobody is allowed on it without a harness.

"This is no different to how the world record bonfire in Norway was built.

"Everyone working on the structure has also completed a bonfire safety course and a full risk assessment had been carried out before we started to build it. There is also a cordon in place around the bonfire to further ensure the safety of the public.

"Everything is currently running exactly as it should be and we are happy that there has been no accidents or incidents during our builds.

"It may look like dangerous work but we have planned everything out to ensure that it will be built in a safe way."
