Craigroyston FC targeted by firestarters as blaze erupts at shower block

Police Scotland have launched an investigation after arsonists started a fire at an Edinburgh football ground.

Heartbreaking images showed billowing smoke travelling into the sky after a shower block was set on fire at the Craigroyston playing fields on Edinburgh's Muirhouse Parkway.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended the blaze with a local resident capturing a picture of a fire engine in attendance at around 9pm on Sunday.

The fields are home to Craigroyston Community Youth Football Club who play their matches there.

A source said that large containers were set ablaze and police have confirmed they are treating the inferno as deliberate.

Posting on the club's Facebook page, Ian Weatherston said the blaze had been 'significant' and thanked the fire service for their help.

He said: "Thanks to everyone asking about the club, unfortunately there was a significant fire at the club rooms tonight which looks like it was set deliberately.

"However thanks to the quick response of the fire services they prevented it being worse than it was.

"We will assess the full extent of the damage tomorrow and support the police with there investigation, we will keep everyone informed, stay safe #onecraigie."

Local councillor, Hal Osler, took to Twitter to express her displeasure at the latest attack on a club that has been besieged by anti-social behaviour in the recent past.

She said: "After all that has happened for Craigroyston FC in St Mark’s Park I’m lost for words over this. Why would you want to destroy a facility that’s just trying to help a community and give people somewhere safe and positive to be. THEY ARE VOLUNTEERS and don’t deserve this."

Locals online blasted the 'scumbags' who lit up the block.

One wrote: "Absolutely shocking this stuff is sickening let’s hope they haven’t broke a lot of children’s hearts tonight just for a bit of fun."

Another added: "Scum of the earth.

"A cracking club offering local kids a place to play and create a social life. Hope they get the culprits.

"Hope all the trophies and mementoes were saved and of course no one hurt."

A third added: "Scumbags damaging local facilities" according to the Daily Record.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Around 9pm on Sunday, 19 September 2021, police were informed of a fire at Craigroyston Playing Fields."
