Craigneuk kids cut above the rest as new school term begins

Children from Craigneuk will look a cut above the rest as they start the new school year this week.

Hairdresser Leighanne Hart gave them a trim to ensure the youngsters could return to school in style.

Following the success of Craigneuk Lifelong Learning Centre’s school uniform bank, staff decided to offer free haircuts to children returning or starting school or nursery.

Liz Nolan, community organiser at the centre, said: “We had about a dozen come in for a haircut. For the girls it was just a trim but the boys all seemed to want the same haircut that’s long at the top and swept to the side.

“We decided to start the haircuts this year after the success of our school uniform bank.

“The uniform bank probably isn’t that different from years ago when children would get their older brother or sister’s clothes, or clothes from your cousin.

“And some of the uniforms are more expensive than others – a green shirt costs much more than a white shirt.

“Haircuts are just another financial pressure on parents at this time of year, especially when there’s a few children in the one family.

“We weren’t sure how the uptake would be but will definitely be offering them again next year.

“We’d like to say thanks to Leighanne for cutting the children’s hair.”
