Craigavon Lakes waterwheel should be restored, ABC Council told

A Craigavon councillor has asked council officers to investigate the possibility of restoring a waterwheel and its surrounding area at Craigavon Lakes.

Speaking at a meeting of Council’s leisure and community services committee, SDLP councillor, Thomas Larkham raised the issue of the water wheel located in close proximity to Council’s new £35 million leisure centre.

“I have lobbied around the need for a bit of work to be done to this site,” said Cllr Larkham.

“It is very overgrown and very under invested and it is not great looking. Would there be any possibility to try and get something done there?

“I have asked officers to explore the possibility of having this area restored, I don’t mean making the wheel fully operational. I had a meeting with Mark Parkinson [Council’s strategic director] and I understand that would cost a lot of money.

“When I say restored I mean to make it look presentable and that is my proposal.”

This proposal was supported by his party colleague Councillor Declan McAlinden.

“I agree,” said Clle McAlinden. “At the last site meeting I remarked on this issue and am glad it has been brought up tonight.”

The Chair of the Committee, Councillor Catherine Nelson, asked Mr Parkinson to bring a report on this issue back to the next meeting and he would confirm he would explore a number of options and present his findings to October’s committee meeting.
