Craig Wighton Hearts loan hint has Arbroath on alert over potential Gayfield return

Arbroath want to bring Craig Wighton back to Gayfield on loan.

The Hearts striker spent a successful spell at the Angus club last season before the campaign was cut short.

Wighton returned to Tynecastle and has been given more of an opportunity by Robbie Neilson this season.

However, the signing of French striker Armand Gnanduillet, as well as Liam Boyce, Steven Naismith and Euan Henderson all able to play up front means Wighton faces stiff competition for game time in Gorgie.

Neilson confirmed earlier this week that the club would consider whether or not to let Wighton leave on loan for the remainder of the season.

If Hearts give the green light, then a return to to The Lichties could appeal after he scored three times in five appearances last year, and The Courier reports that Campbell has made his interest in the player known.

Having Wighton help Arbroath in their Championship survival struggle and potentially taking points off their title rivals could suit The Jambos.

Wighton is out of contract in the summer and while Neilson hasn’t ruled out his prospects of earning a new contract, Hearts’ recruitment this window suggests it won’t be forthcoming.
