Craig Levein returns to football after Hearts exit as former Tynecastle boss 'joins' Brechin City

Former Hearts manager Craig Levein is set to join Brechin City and head up the club's quest to return to the professional leagues, according to a report.

City fell out of the SPFL setup after a play-off defeat to ambitious Fife side Kelty Hearts last month.

But Glebe Park chiefs are keen to rebuild and avoid the same fate as East Stirlingshire and Berwick Rangers who have failed in their attempts to return since relegation in 2016 and 2019 respectively.

That involves Levein joining in a role akin to the director of football remit he had at Hearts before also taking over managerial duties after Ian Cathro's sacking towards the start of the 2017-18 campaign.

His first task will be to replace departed manager Michael Paton and it's claimed by the Courier that he will be working "at no cost" to the Angus club.

It would be Levein's first role in the game since officially leaving Hearts in June 2020, although he has worked as a pundit for the BBC in the intervening period.

He previously managed the Scotland national team as well as Dundee United and a first spell in Gorgie between 2000 and 2004.
