Craig Levein leaves Scotland radio colleagues in stitches with hilarious John McGinn comparison

Craig Levein says he'd rather steal a baby gorilla from its mother than try and get the ball off John McGinn.

The Aston Villa man is a Scotland hero and played his part in a huge win in Moldova that sent the Tartan Army into a World Cup playoff in March.

There is business to be done before we can kick our feet back and look ahead to that one, as a point against Denmark at Hampden would ensure a seeded spot and with it a home semi-final.

But the spot itself is secure after another strong playoff campaign that has seen the Scots take 20 points from 27 available.

It was Nathan Patterson and Che Adams among the goals in Chisinau but a good chunk of the post-match chat centred around McGinn - and particularly his ability to retain possession in tight situations.

His low centre of gravity and disproportionate behind make him a hard man to take the ball from.

And speaking on the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast, former Hearts and Scotland boss Levein shared a hilarious conversation he had with Willie Miller - where he compared McGinn to "a gorilla protecting its young."

He said: "When the ball goes up to McGinn, you 100 per cent believe that he's going to maintain possession.

"That's why Patterson will run, because he knows there's no way the guy's going to push him off the ball.

"I was saying to Willie earlier, I was trying to think of what he was like, and I likened it to a gorilla protecting its young."

The razor-sharp analogy sparked immediate chaos with Steven Thompson and Leanne Crighton unable to control their laughter.

After giving everyone a moment to compose themselves, Levein added: "I thought to myself, it would probably be easier to steal the gorilla than get the ball off John McGinn."

Crighton then asked if those were the types of conversations Levein and Miller have when no-one else is listening.

But the Aberdeen hero was quick to distance himself from Levein's madness as he said: "Leanne, I didn't take part in the conversation, I was just listening."
