Craig Levein in shock Brechin City move as former Scotland boss to lead Highland League fightback

Relegated Brechin City have pulled off a major coup by recruiting former Scotland boss Craig Levein to lead their charge back from the Highland League.

Just two weeks after dropping out of the professional set-up the Angus club announced the 56-year-old had joined as a full-time advisor to the board.

Levein, who was sacked by Hearts 18 months ago, is now set to lead Brechin ’s rebuild along with interim chairman Kevin Mackie.

That starts with finding and then supporting a new manager following the exit of Michael Paton.

Trips to Brora Rangers and Wick lie ahead as they look to return to the SPFL at the first time of asking after they lost their relegation play-off to Kelty Hearts last month.

And Levein, who is also tasked with getting the infrastructure in place to benefit both the club and the community, said: "Brechin have a tough job ahead of them and will need to have bags of resilience, focus and stamina to get back to League 2.

“Kevin Mackie has a clear vision for the club and it’s one which I believe in.

“Brechin City is a pretty special club who’ve been around for over 115 years and Kevin, who is Brechin born and bred, is intent on strengthening the club by building a sustainable business model around it.

"I’ve known Kevin for many years and I have no doubt he will take the bull by the horns to turn things around for Brechin."
