Craig Levein in brutally honest Hearts admission as he reveals Tynecastle 'worst day'

Former Hearts manager and director of football Craig Levein has admitted he messed up in both roles at the Tynecastle club.

The ex- Scotland gaffer returned to the dugout for the first time in five years when he took over after young boss Ian Cathro was sacked.

He steadied the ship for a while but things took a turn for the worse in the 2019/20 season and with the Jambos joint-bottom of the Scottish Premiership, Levein was removed from his post by chair Ann Budge following a defeat to St Johnstone - which he describes as the "worst day ever".

And now the 56-year-old has opened up on his second spell in Gorgie, which formally came to an end on June 1 - and reckons the dual role he served from 2017 was too much to handle.

Speaking on the BBC's three-part documentary This Is Our Story: Inside Hearts, Levein said: "I ended up splitting my time between being the manager and the director of football — and probably doing neither job very well, in all honesty.

"It was probably the worst day ever when she called me into her office after we lost to St Johnstone and told me she would be removing me from the manager's position.

"It was the first time in my life I had been sacked and I actually felt sorry for the person who did it. She was emotional and so was I.

"I was disappointed I couldn't do as well as I wanted to do with the first team in particular.

"I joined Hearts in 1983 aged 19. I occasionally have a good relationship with the supporters, and occasionally not, just depending on how good a job I am doing.

"But I'll always have a place in my heart for this club."
