Craig Levein certain Rangers boss Steven Gerrard ditching his 'won the league' celebrations has worked

Former Hearts manager Craig Levein believes he's seen the evolution of Steven Gerrard at Rangers first hand.

And he puts the Ibrox gaffer's current success down to a newfound humbleness that he reckons was absent in his first couple of years in the job.

Levein was defeated by his opposite boss in Gerrard's two visits to Tynecastle in his debut 2018-19 season - and he described the Ibrox man's joy at the final whistle "like he'd just won the league".

The celebrations were premature, of course, as Celtic clinched their eighth title in a row that season. And Levein reckons the same thing happened after Rangers' 2-1 win at the home of their great rivals the following season in December 2019.

Now the former Scotland coach thinks Gerrard has "learnt his lesson" - and is focused on the end goal of the Premiership campaign rather than living in the moment.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, Levein said: "From my point of view, I think we've seen Steven Gerrard evolving.

"I remember when I was at Hearts and after one game at Tynecastle they beat us, and they were celebrating like they had won the league.

"They did the same thing against Celtic, last season I think, it was like the league was over than that was them celebrating.

"I think Steven Gerrard has learnt his lesson. He's much more humble, for me anyway, when I look at his comments and I listen to him.

"I think he's more focused on the endgame this time round, rather than what happened in each individual match.

"For me, that would be a criticism of his work over the last two or three years, when he's almost celebrated every victory like it's won him the league."
