Craig Howie ends Clyde spell to join 'ambitious' Alloa and further his career

Defender Craig Howie has left Clyde to join "ambitious" Alloa in a bid to play his way in to the Championship.

Howie, 24, on Tuesday evening ended a two-year spell at Broadwood and signed a one-year contract with the Wasps.

As well as the ambition shown by Alloa, Howie felt he needed a fresh start.

He said: "It was definitely a hard decision to leave.

"Over the last two years, the Clyde fans have really taken to me and they've been a big loss to the team and myself in the past year.

"I feel that I missed out a little bit in my last year at Clyde with fans not being there.

"It was definitely a tough decision to make, but it's one that I made because I'm just trying to better myself and play at as high a level as possible.

"I signed with Alloa and with them just coming down from the Championship, having been there for a good few years, they have the ambition of going straight back up.

"In the last couple of years it's been a bit of a relegation battle, the prospect of looking to challenge next season in what is going to be a really competitive league is just something I thought I'd want to grab.

"But Clyde definitely have the potential to be there or thereabouts next season also."

Injuries and Covid seriously hampered Howie's last season at Clyde, and a broken cheekbone forced him to watch their do-or-die final clash against East Fife from the Broadwood stands, as his side won 2-1 to avoid the play-off.

Rutherglen man Howie said: "In the last couple of years it has been very stop-start; personally I've had quite a few injuries and with Covid I just felt as though I need a fresh start somewhere as well.

"All those factors combined meant I just felt it was the right time to move on.

"It's a one-year deal but hopefully at the end of next season we'll be looking to be in the Championship and we'll see what happens from there.

"I'm trying not to look too far ahead at the moment but I'm really excited."
