Craig Gordon has wowed his Scotland teammates on his return to the international fold.
The Hearts ‘keeper was handed a recall after an impressive start to the season for the Tynecastle club, and could win his first Scotland cap in two years in tonight’s massive Euro 2020 play-off final in Serbia.
Gordon has produced huge saves for the Jambos already this season, notably in their Scottish Cup semi-final victory over rivals Hibs.
After a period of kicking his heels on the Celtic bench, Gordon is getting back to his best and those in the Steve Clarke’s squad who maybe weren’t aware of just how good he could be, certainly are now according to goalkeeping coach Stevie Woods.
“It was the first time the boys had seen Craig since he had been back playing regularly and I think they were all pleasantly surprised at the level he is at just now,” he said.
“David Marshall has been consistently excellent since we brought him back into the Scotland squad and the boys who have stepped in to be No. 3 or 4 have all consistently performed and made sure training is at a high standard.
“I think we have a good crop.”
Clarke has a choice to make between Marshall and Gordon as to who is handed the gloves for Scotland’s biggest game in over two decades.
Marshall, having not let Scotland down while Gordon was out of favour, is the favourite to get the nod, although Gordon’s uncanny ability to produce match-winning saves is hard to ignore.
We asked Edinburgh Live readers which of the ‘keepers should start in Belgrade tonight, and the answer was unsurprisingly in favour of the Hearts man.
Even if he doesn’t feature tonight however, it’s likely he’ll get some action in at least one of the upcoming Nations League matches against Slovakia and Israel.
