Craig Gordon's Scotland selection explained as Steve Clarke makes 'no dramas' claim

Craig Gordon was always going to start for Scotland against the Faroe Islands tonight.

Steve Clarke has explained his decision to drop David Marshall in favour of the Hearts ‘keeper.

Marshall has taken some criticism after perhaps not covering himself in glory for Austria’s opening goal at Hampden last Thursday night then again for Israel’s in Tel Aviv on Sunday.

Gordon has been in fine form this season as Hearts ease themselves towards the Championship title and some would have preferred to have seen him take the gloves from Marshall earlier.

But Clarke explained his thinking behind the switch between the sticks and also those further up the park as he looks for a first win of the 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.

He said: “It was always 100% in my thinking for David to play the first two games in goals then Craig to play tonight, so no dramas.

“The boys are just desperate to get back out on the park and play. Hopefully we can get an early lead and go on to have a good night.

“I think it’s a game we should dominate possession and the ball and hopefully Fraser and Robertson can provide good crosses for our two strikers.”
