Craig Gordon retires from football after making Scotland World Cup squad at 43

Craig Gordon has decided to hang up his gloves -

Scotland and Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 43, bringing an end to a remarkable 24-year career.

Gordon was part of Scotland’s squad for this summer’s World Cup finals, though he did not feature in any of the three matches, with Nottingham Forest’s Angus Gunn starting in goal.

Gordon, a product of the Hearts academy, amassed an impressive 84 international caps for Scotland and secured a glittering array of club honours. His trophy cabinet boasts six league titles, four Scottish Cups – including his first with his boyhood club – five Scottish League Cups, and numerous European football appearances across spells with Sunderland, Celtic, and his return to Tynecastle in 2020.

His career was notably punctuated by a series of severe injuries, yet Gordon’s unwavering resilience and determination to return to the pitch were as defining as his undeniable talent.

Reflecting on his journey, Gordon shared a heartfelt message on Instagram: "Everyone has dreams. Mine were probably no different to most kids’, to play for my club and my country, Heart of Midlothian and Scotland.

"Improbable? Perhaps. Impossible? Absolutely not. Hard work, sacrifices, setbacks, step by step dreams become reality, from supporting Hearts to playing for Hearts."

He spoke of the unique feeling of playing at his home stadium: "There’s nothing better than walking out here at Tynecastle, hearing Gorgie Roar and celebrating a victory."

Gordon expressed gratitude for his career, stating: "I’ve never wanted it to end, but end it must. I have lived my dreams and for that, I am so thankful, thankful for my team-mates and coaches pushing me all the way, thankful for my opponents for spurring me on, thankful for the medical staff who have worked with me through the years, thankful to my loved ones for their support and thankful to the fans for being behind me for 24 years."

Concluding his message, the veteran goalkeeper addressed the supporters directly: "Now the gloves are finally off, I bid farewell to my playing career. You the fans have given me everything and it has been a privilege to represent you. I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have. From the bottom of my heart, thank you."
