Craig Gordon handed Euro 2020 boost as Steve Clarke hints at starting role for Hearts star

Scotland boss Steve Clarke has hinted that Craig Gordon could start Euro 2020 as his first choice goalkeeper.

The Hearts goalkeeper was between the sticks for the 2-2 draw with the Netherlands last week with David Marshall left out because of Covid issues in the camp.

Marshall, along with six other players, were left in Spain as Scotland took on Frank de Boer's side in Portugal ahead of the European campaign after coming into close contact with John Fleck - who tested positive for Covid.

Marshall has struggled this season and narrowly avoided relegation with Derby County but played a vital role in Scotland qualifying for the tournament back in November.

Gordon has had a successful campaign for Hearts, despite the club's overall struggles in the Championship, and Clarke insists he still has to make a decision.

Rangers goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin is also in the squad for the tournament but it appears to be a straight shootout between Gordon and Marshall for the position.

When asked about the goalkeeping spot, Clarke said: “I haven’t got any 100 per cent decisions in my mind.

“I’m going to keep an open mind. I’m not going to tie things down in terms of ‘this is the way I’m going to go’.

"The boys who need minutes, we will try to give them that against Luxembourg but I obviously also want a performance. I want to look at one or two things for the tournament, one or two little combinations. It’s about getting the balance and the team right. We want to win and go into the tournament with a good feeling.”
