Craig Ferguson refusing to mock Britney Spears after her breakdown clip goes viral

A clip of Craig Ferguson refusing to mock Britney Spears after her breakdown has gone viral after it resurfaced 14 years on.

The clip resurfaced in the new Hulu documentary Framing Britney Spears, which looks at Britney's career and the conservatorship she's lived under for 12 years that allows other people to control her life.

In 2007 former Late Late Show host Craig said he wouldn't mock Britney or her mental health, despite the show's writers writing jokes about what she was going through.

Craig, who has battled addiction, said in the clip: "The thing is, you can embarrass somebody to death.

"I'm starting to feel uncomfortable about making fun of these people.

"Funny comedy should have a certain amount of joy in it.

"It should be about us attacking the powerful people, attacking the politicians and the Trumps and the blowhards…

"We shouldn't be attacking the vulnerable people."

He also said he was "convinced" he would be "fired" for refusing to make fun of Spears.

After the documentary aired there has been renewed support for the Free Britney movement, which seeks to get the conservatorship lifted.

Viewers also slammed the media for its treatment of Britney, as well as her ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake for the way he treated her when they broke up.

Britney addressed the backlash on Instagram, writing: "I'll always love being on stage .... but I am taking the time to learn and be a normal person.

"I love simply enjoying the basics of every day [sic] life !!!! Each person has their story and their take on other people's stories !!!!"

The singer continued: "We all have so many different bright beautiful lives.

"Remember, no matter what we think we know about a person's life it is nothing compared to the actual person living behind the lens."
