Craig David and Sheila Hancock lead celebs in New Year Honours list 2021

Actress Sheila Hancock and crooner Craig David lead a star-studded New Year Honours list as more than 1,200 people are recognised for their contributions to public life.

The screen legend, 87, is made a Dame for her services to drama after a glittering career.

Hancock, who began her career in theatre before becoming a screen stalwart, joked she felt “slightly miscast” on receiving the honour.

She quipped: “I’ve never felt myself this sort of person. It just doesn’t happen to people like me.

“I feel I may be lowering the tone.”

Honours also went to screenwriter Jed Mercurio, who receives an OBE after keeping the nation hooked with dramas Line of Duty and Bodyguard.

Former EastEnders actress Nina Wadia, who rose to fame in sketch show Goodness Gracious Me, is made an OBE.

Coronation Street stalwart Sally Dynevor, who has played Sally Webster on the soap since 1986, said she was “still in shock” after getting the news she would become an MBE.

Actress Lesley Manville, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2017 for the Phantom Thread, is made a CBE after a stellar career on the stage and screen.

Detectorists star Toby Jones, who also starred in the Harry Potter franchise, becomes an OBE.

In music, Noughties garage star Craig David is recognised with an MBE after reinventing himself.

His debut album Born To Do It went straight to the top of the charts in 2000 but he struggled to find success with follow up records.

However his 2016 album Following My Intuition returned to number one, leading to renewed success and a slot on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage.

Lewis Hamilton is given a knighthood following pressure on the Prime Minister to approve the accolade.

He had previously been repeatedly overlooked, reportedly due to his tax affairs.

The 35-year-old has had a bumper year after equalling Michael Schumacher ’s record with a seventh Formula One title and scooping Sports Personality of the Year for the second time.

He credited the Black Lives Matter movement for giving him new focus, telling the BBC on Boxing Day: “It was a different drive than what I’ve had in me in the past, to get to the end of those races first so that I could utilise that platform (for Black Lives Matter) and shine the light as bright as possible.”

England legends Ron Flowers and Jimmy Greaves are awarded MBEs for their services to football.

Leading make-up artist Pat McGrath and conductor Jane Glover are also made Dames.

Cinematographer Roger Deakins, 71, who counts The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, 1917, A Beautiful Mind, Skyfall and Blade Runner 2049 among his best-known features, is also knighted.

Rugby League star Rob Burrow receives an MBE for his campaigning around motor neurone after being diagnosed with the terminal illness.

In fashion, influential make-up artist Pat McGrath becomes a dame for services to the fashion and beauty industry and to diversity.

She said she was “truly delighted and humbled” to receive the honour, crediting her Jamaican-born mother Jean for inspiring her passion for beauty.

Boris Johnson said the awards were a “welcome reminder of the strength of human spirit” after a year of immense adversity.

He said: “The 2021 New Year Honours offer us an opportunity to salute their dedication and recognise many who have gone above and beyond in their contribution to our country.

“As we begin a new year and continue to come together to fight this virus, may their service and stories be an inspiration to us all.”
