Craig Charles at Virgin Money Unity Arena is the antidote we need to lockdown blues

Things are a bit bleak at the moment, aren't they?

Infection rates are up, tougher restrictions are coming in - even the prospect of a family Christmas is looking uncertain.

With all that going on, what we really need is the chance to let our hair down and have a good old dance.

Of course, in most settings that would be wildly irresponsible, but in comes the innovative socially-distanced arena at Newcastle Racecourse and the legendary Craig Charles to save the day.

With the audience spread out into separate 'bubbles', everyone can dance freely in their groups of six, staying well away from anyone else they might put at risk.

I'll confess when I arrived I was sceptical about how social distancing would work for a show like this - surely any atmosphere would be lost in the wide gaps between groups? Would people be too self-conscious to dance in their own little pens?

But my worries quickly prove ill-founded.

The crowd are warmed up by Gateshead boys Smoove and Turrell, whose signature brand of 'Northern Funk' weaves in some classic rave sounds and a bit of electronica for good measure.

Then in comes Craig to transport us out of our lockdown blues and into a boogie wonderland.

It's a set with plenty of favourites and a fair few surprises, all mixed with obvious skill and playful inventiveness.

What makes it brilliant, though, is the DJ, actor and presenter's own infectious enthusiasm.

He sings and dances along to every tune, playing air guitar along to a Marvin Gaye remix and 'getting down' so thoroughly that he's entirely hidden behind his equipment.

And the crowd dance with him. After months of lockdown, there's something incredible about watching a field full of people jump and dance with absolute joy and abandon.

You've got to respect the confidence of someone willing to kill the music to let a socially-distanced, open air crowd take over the lead vocals, but he goes for it, letting us take over the signing from Stevie Wonder ("You can't go wrong with Stevie" he tells us, repeatedly - it's hard to argue otherwise).

There's a special guest appearance from Craig Charles' son, Jack Tyson Charles, who gives the DJ a "proud dad moment" with some beautiful vocals on a couple of mellow original tunes.

Then, in case we were starting to get chilly, the energy is back up to 100 and the entire field is jumping once again.

Quite aside from being the most exercise I've done since lockdown started, it's a special feeling to be dancing with other people. We might be socially-distanced, but we're bonded by the beat and the rhythm.

After months apart, this is just what we needed.
