Craig Bryson issues emphatic response to 'winding down' suggestion

Aberdeen’s marquee summer signing Craig Bryson has targeted silverware and a place in the Europa League group stage.

And the former Scotland star insisted he has not returned to his homeland to "wind down" his career.

Bryson, 32, has joined the Dons on a two-year deal after rejecting the offer of a new contract with Derby County and spurning several other approaches south of the border.

Hearts and his old club Kilmarnock were also understood to be on his trail.

But the experienced midfielder is adamant the switch to Aberdeen provides the perfect opportunity to sample continental competition for the first time and lift a trophy with the Dons.

“I don’t want people to think I’m coming to Scotland to wind down my career and just wait until I retire,” said Bryson. “I want to play in semi-finals, cup finals - big games.

“I had the chance to stay in England, either at Derby or a couple of other clubs, and there was interest from elsewhere in Scotland. But coming to Aberdeen just felt right. There was nowhere else I wanted to be.

“I’ll be doing everything I can here to try and get this club more silverware.

“Europe will be another fantastic experience for me. I’ve been playing football for 16 years and have never played in any sort of European tie. There are some interesting trips to come and hopefully this season we can go all the way to the Europa League group stage.”
