Craig Bellamy leaves Cardiff City to join Anderlecht as under-21s coach

Craig Bellamy has been confirmed as the new boss of Anderlecht's under-21s.

The Welshman has signed a three-year deal with the Belgian club and will work under Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany and former Wales striker Simon Davies in the club's academy set-up.

Countryman Davies has taken up the role of head coach with the first team, while Kompany, who's believed to be a personal friend of Bellamy, was recently confirmed as the club's player/manager.

Confirming the news, Anderlecht Youth Director Jean Kindermans said: “We are very happy with Craig’s arrival at RSC Anderlecht. He has a lot of experience and will be a great mentor for our youth players mentally speaking, but also in terms of football skills. As coach of the U21 team, his task will be to prepare our young talents for the first team.

“The appointment of Craig proves we continue our efforts to improve our youth development".

Bellamy previously played a leading role in the Cardiff City academy, but saw his future cast in doubt following allegations of bullying made against him by a youth player.

The Bluebirds were last month moved to dismiss reports in the national media that the 39-year old had been removed from his post.

Bellamy, who won 78 caps for his country as a player, strenuously denies the allegations.

It's understood that his departure will not have any effect on Cardiff's investigation.

Rumours over his future were then sent into overdrive when Anderlecht's former press officer posted a picture of himself and Bellamy on Instagram, describing the Welshman as 'My new colleague'.

The former Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester City star has previously been keen on becoming Cardiff and Wales manager, and was in talks to succeed Chris Coleman as boss of the national team, giving what FAW insiders dubbed a 'Hollywood interview'.

Bellamy has always stated a willingness to work from the bottom of the management ladder in order to prove himself, and has now taken the decision to move to Brussels.
