Craft events in Dumfries on Australia Day to help fire-ravaged wildlife

Crafty folk are being asked to spare time for Australia’s fire-ravaged wildlife this weekend.

Knitters, crocheters and sewers are all needed at a gathering at Springholm Memorial Hall on Sunday.

Castle Douglas Co-op’s member pioneer Angela Orro has organised the event so that people can make mittens, pouches and nests that will be sent to Australia.

There has been great support from the community with the Co-op and Tesco stores in Castle Douglas providing refreshments and other businesses and organisations helping with donations of cash and materials.

Knitters and crocheters are encouraged to go along between 11am and 5pm with sewers asked to bring their sewing machines and extension reels. Donations of 100 per cent wool yarn, 100 per cent cotton and brushed cotton and threads and scissors are also needed.

Everyone is welcome and donations of material or finished items can be made at the drop-off point at the Co-op in Castle Douglas.

New Abbey crafter Anne Arnold, pictured right, is also holding a fundraiser at Islesteps Hall on Sunday – which is also Australia Day.

The free entry coffee and cake day will take place from 10.30am to 3.30pm.

Anne, of Solway Woolscapes, has also created koala badges to sell on the day.
