CPS adds 2 school days because of closings related to snow, cold

March 06--Chicago Public Schools has tacked on two more days at the end of the school year to make up for classes canceled in February because of snow and cold weather.

With cold weather already having put off summer break by a day, students will now remain in class three days longer than originally scheduled.

The latest days added to the school year are Thursday, June 18, and Friday, June 19, the district said in a statement Friday.

CPS was one of several Chicago-area school districts that closed Feb. 2, a day after the Super Bowl weekend storm dumped about 19 inches of snow on the city. The district also canceled classes Feb. 19, when the forecast threatened wind chills as low as minus 30 degrees.

Cold weather in January led to two days of canceled classes, one of which was made up at the end of January. The district set June 17 for the other makeup day.

CPS teachers will also have a longer school year, with professional development days rescheduled for June 22, 23 and 24.

CPS does not have a formal policy on when weather conditions warrant closing schools, but district spokesman Bill McCaffrey previously said the district considers temperatures, wind speeds, snow accumulation and whether students can safely travel to and from school.
