The CPI(M) joined the Congress in demanding a probe into the latest revelations made by French portal Mediapart that €1 million were paid to a ‘middleman’ in the deal to buy 36 Rafale jets.

The party said the Mediapart’s report has again raised the issue of kickbacks and other illegal payments. “The dogged refusal by the Modi government to order a probe into the Rafale deal raises suspicion that it has something to hide in the matter,” the CPI (M) Polit Bureau said in a statement here. The deal has been audited by Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), which claimed that the Narendra Modi government’s Rafale deal was 2.86% cheaper than the one the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance was negotiating.
The CAG audit report could not obviously look into the issue of illegal payments, the CPI(M) said demanding that a high-level investigation is essential, specially into the cancellation of the earlier order and placing a fresh one for 36 air crafts at a higher cost.
