A Chicago Police detective who works out of a police facility on the West Side has tested positive for COVID-19.

The detective, assigned to the department’s police shooting team, was last at work on March 16, according to an email from CPD Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan that was obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.

Anthony Guglielmi, the department’s chief spokesman, said in a statement the detective would remain at home until they are medically cleared to return to work.

“The health and safety of our employees is the utmost priority,” Guglielmi said. “Once we were notified of the confirmed case, the department began a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the facility where the employee was stationed. The employee’s work area and any vehicles and equipment used by the individual are also being cleaned.”

The department has been in contact with the Chicago Department of Public Health to identify other people who the detective recently came in contact with, “including any CPD personnel who may have interacted with the employee,” Guglielmi said.

The detective’s case comes a day after a second member of the Chicago Fire Department tested positive for COVID-19.
