The organisers of CPAC were forced to remind attendees that wearing masks was compulsory at the conference, setting off a wave of boos and jeers.
After one speaker finished up his speech by leading a chant of “freedom!” that saw attendees rise to their feet, event organisers took to the stage, begging the crowd to wear their masks at all times.
Shouts of complaint echoed around the ballroom at the order to don a face covering the stop the spread of Covid-19.
At the close of a segment of the agenda covering the Bill of Rights, Josh Mandel, former Ohio state treasurer, wrapped up his remarks about the freedom of petition and riled up the crowd with the chant, setting off a standing ovation.
As he exited the stage, event officials strode on with a reminder that conservatives believe in the rule of law.
“I know this might seem a little bit of a downer,” added the emcee. “But we also believe in property rights ... and a private hotel just like a house gets to set its own rules.”
CPAC director Carley Conley, took over reminding the audience that they want to be respectful of the ordinances of the hotel.
“In the ballroom, when you’re seated, you should still be wearing a mask... so, if everyone can go ahead and work on that,” she said as the first shouts came from the attendees.
“I know, it’s not the most fun,” she added as the jeers became louder.
The emcee added: “You have the right to set the rules in your own house, and we’re borrowing someone else’s house, so we need to comply with those rules.”
Sporadic shouts could still be heard as the pair exited the stage after wishing everyone a good conference.
CPAC is taking place at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando, Florida.
A spokesperson for Hyatt told the Independent on Saturday “that some guests have been asked to leave the hotel property, and left the property without incident, as a result of not complying with the face coverings mandate in place.
“All guests attending CPAC are asked to sign a Code of Conduct, developed by CPAC organisers, which includes specifics on Hyatt’s face coverings policy and Orange County, Florida’s face coverings mandate,” said the spokesperson. “Guests who are not willing to comply with the policy will be asked to leave the premises or may be given the option to remain in their guestroom for the duration of their visit.”
Mr Mandel, who is running for the Senate in Ohio, thanked Florida governor Ron DeSantis for opening up the state while decrying the efforts of his own governor Mike DeWine to stem the spread of the coronavirus in the early days of the pandemic.
There have been 1.89 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Florida and 30,477 officially recorded deaths.
