Cosy Club and Lounge to begin 'phased' reopening

Loungers, the company behind Cosy Club and Lounge, has said it will start a phased reopening of its sites in England from next week - before fully throwing open its doors in May.

The company plans to open 47 of its sites in England on April 12 as lockdown restrictions ease, and five in Wales on April 26. It will start serving at the rest of its 172 restaurants, bars and cafes across the two countries next month.

The business said it had won a 12-month extension from Santander and the Bank of Ireland for a loan facility that was put in place in April last year.

The agreements provide up to £25 million for Loungers, and conditions that need to be met by the business have been changed.

Sales surged at cafe bar chain after it reopened sites from the first lockdown and was buoyed by the Eat Out to Help Out scheme.

The group, which runs 137 individually titled Lounge sites and 30 Cosy Club venues, saw shares jump and its like-for-like sales soared by 29.9% in the 10 weeks from July 4.

The state-backed Eat Out to Help Out discount scheme and cuts to VAT on food and soft drinks helped to drive revenues higher, it said.

However, no Eat Out to Help Out scheme as been announced by chancellor Rishi Sunak this time around.

Pubs and restaurants in England can reopen beer gardens and outdoor spaces from Monday, April 12.
