Coyote Ugly Saloon announces temporary closure due to water damage

Coyote Ugly Saloon in Manchester city centre has been forced to temporarily close with immediate effect.

The bar opened less than a year ago on Deansgate Locks and the Manchester Evening News was invited along to view auditions for jobs.

A team of women-only bartenders was recruited to dance on the bar tops, mix up cocktails, sing and yell just like the characters of the hit 2000 Hollywood movie Coyote Ugly.

On March 18, a message was posted on the bar's Facebook page announcing it was closed as a result of 'excessive water damage' which had affected the electrics.

Today, the management posted an update confirming the closure looks set to continue for some time.

Following health and safety inspections, it has been decided the landlord will have to take back the venue to make it watertight again.

Investigation works will involve removing the ceiling and the entire internal building being covered in scaffold making it impossible to continue trading.

Communications director Sean McMahon told the Manchester Evening News the damage was caused by water leaking in through the roof.

"It's a considerable amount of damage," he said.

"It's been deemed unsafe and we can't carry on while they carry out essential repairs."

Mr McMahon said Coyote Ugly staff have been left "heartbroken" by the news and many are now in search of new employment.

"The majority are looking for new jobs," he added.

"They are being offered position in Liverpool but that's not going to be convenient for everybody and we don't have any other bars in Manchester.

"But the bar community in Manchester is brilliant, lots of people have been in touch this morning.

"We're supporting our staff as best we can."

There is no time frame on when Coyote Ugly will reopen but Mr McMahon said the company is "adamant" the closure is temporary.

The Facebook statement added: "We do hope on re-opening as soon as we can and apologise for any inconvenience caused by this unforeseen issue.
