Cows caught in Gold Coast rain stir up their own storm

The cattle stand knee-deep in water after heavy rainfall on the paddock next to a busy intersection.

The owner of a herd of cows in a flooded Gold Coast paddock is pleading with the public not to follow through with threats to release them.

Some people have expressed concern about the cattle being in knee-deep water after heavy rainfall in the paddock next to a busy Carrara intersection, affectionately known to locals as "Cow Corner".

"I have a caretaker on the property and we monitor them very, very closely," cow owner Judy Turner said.

"I've started putting them through a foot bath to harden their feet.

"Please don't let the cows out, it would be an absolute disaster."

Reported to the RSPCA

Gold Coast resident Havley Mac said she reported the waterlogged cows to the RSCPA and other wildlife rescue organisations.

"The water was halfway up their legs," she said.

Ms Turner, however, said the public should not follow through with threats to release the animals.

"Somebody thinking they were doing the right thing was going to let the bulls out last night," she said.

Their owner said the bulls fought each other when mixed together.

"A couple of them weigh over 1,000 kilograms and when they fight, they fight," she said.

"Nothing will stop them. They will just trash everything in their way and damage each other really badly."

Water expected to quickly recede

Flooding in the paddock has started to subside, but if water levels rise today the cows will be moved to higher ground.

"I try and keep the cows out of the water as much as I can," Ms Turner said.

RSPCA senior rescue unit officer Josephine Jordaan confirmed the organisation received two reports of cows in water overnight.

She said she had been in touch with Mrs Turner regarding the public's concerns.

"With the fine weather today I'm sure the small amount of flood waters will drain away quickly," Ms Jordaan said.
