Cowgate closed in Edinburgh city centre after woman dies falling from George IV Bridge

A woman has died after falling from George IV Bridge in Edinburgh city centre.

The Cowgate was closed following the incident at 9.40am on Tuesday.

Drivers and pedestrians were asked to avoid the area and traffic is queueing on surrounding roads.

Police Scotland's Edinburgh Division said: "Cowgate is currently closed following a report of a person falling from George IV Bridge, which was received at around 9.40am on Tuesday 18th June.

"Officers remain at the scene and the public are asked to avoid the area."

The street was reopened later on Tuesday afternoon.
