Cowboys sign kicker Mike Nugent to replace injured Dan Bailey

The Dallas Cowboys are signing veteran kicker Mike Nugent to replace the injured Dan Bailey, the team announced Tuesday.

Nugent will replace veteran defensive end Damontre Moore on the Cowboys' 53-man roster. Moore, who is from Rowlett and Texas A&M, was signed as a free agent in the offseason. He was inactive Sunday at San Francisco after playing in the previous three games. He was suspended for the first two games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy (he was cited for a DWI last December while playing for Seattle).

Nugent was one of three kickers who worked out for the Cowboys on Tuesday, joining Jason Myers and Sam Irwin-Hill.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Monday that Bailey will miss "at least a few weeks" after he strained his groin Sunday at San Francisco.

This will be Nugent's 13th season in the NFL. He spent his first four seasons with the New York Jets and his previous seven seasons with the Bengals. He's also kicked for Tampa Bay and Arizona.

Nugent has made 80.8 percent (236 of 292) of his field-goal attempts in his career and he's connected on 344 of 355 extra-point attempts. In 2016 with the Bengals, Nugent made 23 of 29 field-goal attempts with a long of 47 yards.

Nugent, 35, was the 47th overall pick of the 2005 draft out of Ohio State, where he twice earned All-America honors and was a member of the Buckeyes' 2002 national championship team.
