Cowboys rookie Elliott to miss a few days of practice with hamstring injury

OXNARD, Calif. _ Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott will miss a few days of training camp practice after he injured his right hamstring late in team drills Tuesday, club executive vice president Stephen Jones told reporters Wednesday.

Jones said the Cowboys will be cautious with Elliott, the fourth overall pick in the draft. They're not going to push Elliott early in training camp. He's expected to be the Cowboys' starter and get the bulk of the carries during the regular season.

"He's sore. We'll be obviously very conservative with that in terms of how he feels," Jones said. "Those soft tissue issues in camps can be tricky. We have to make sure all the soreness is out and he's ready to go before we put him back out there. I don't see him getting back out here. He may miss some time."

Elliott was waiting his turn with the first-team behind team drills Tuesday when he quickly went to the ground. An athletic trainer came over to stretch out his leg. He never went back into team drills.

The Cowboys will be without two of their top three running backs in practice now, with Darren McFadden starting camp on the non-football injury list while recovering from a fractured right elbow.

The Cowboys are off Wednesday, but return to practice Thursday.
