Cowboys restructure Witten's contract, creating $2.75 million in cap space

No, it's not a new contract for Cowboys tight end Jason Witten this time around.

But the Cowboys have restructured Witten's contract to create an additional $2.75 million in salary cap space, according to a source, that will give the club a little more wiggle room if needed.

The Cowboys converted $5.5 million of Witten's $6.5 million base salary into a signing bonus to create the cap space.

Last week, the Cowboys also restructured the contracts of cornerback Orlando Scandrick and linebacker Sean Lee. The Scandrick restructure created $3 million in cap space.

So, the Witten and Scandrick restructures in the last week will give the Cowboys almost $6 million more in salary cap space.

Five years ago, heading into the season opener against the Giants, the Cowboys signed Witten to a five-year contract extension. At the time, Witten had two years left on his current deal. That's exactly where Witten, 34, is now, with two years left on his current deal heading into 2016.
