Cowboys QB Romo grieves for Dallas ambush victim he met: 'Just a special, special guy'

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo felt a bit of a personal sting from the Dallas police ambush. One of the officers killed was a big Cowboys fan and had met Romo and other D-FW athletes.

In a radio interview on 105.3 FM "The Fan," Romo shared his grief and his memories of his meeting with Dallas Police Officer Patrick Zamarripa.

"It's a tough thing to describe," Romo said. "We'd met his wife and him, and he was just such a _ you know how you meet people and they have a good soul, you can just tell this person, he's got a softness to him and enjoys people? He's got a great attitude."

Zamarripa was a big sports fan, and was known for taking photos with athletes and other famous people and sharing on them on social media.

Romo lamented wanting to do something but being helpless during the shooting. Four Dallas police officers and one DART police officer were killed in last Thursday's attack.

"When you meet people like that and then something tragic happens, it's just hard to think about really," Romo told The Fan. "First thing you want to do is help out in any way you can. You know you really can't. Then secondly you start thinking about your own life, and your kids and your family, and it just takes you. And then it's just hard. It's nothing that you can do or say to bridge the gap and make things OK. For people who are used to having control and to help others and do things, it's just a feeling of not having a chance to be there for people.

"It's just life sometimes has really difficult things that happen, and we don't have all the answers for that," Romo said. "And I feel like, you know, it's just a tough week and it's going to be a tough time for a long time. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family.

"He was a great guy. He loved sports. And you know I'm tough for two minutes, he's just a special, special guy. It's tough."
