Cowboys QB Dak Prescott endures another loss, mourns death of his grandmother

If Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has not suffered enough over the last couple of years, he now must endure the passing of maternal grandmother Margeret Ebarb.

Prescott acknowledged her passing with a series of messages on Instagram Friday morning.

“We wouldn’t be here without you and I promise to make you proud,” Prescott wrote.

He also added, “Rest Easy Mammy and I Love you So Much. Until we dance again.”

Prescott lost his mom, Peggy, to cancer when he was a college sophomore at Mississippi State. Ebarb, his mom’s mother, played an increased role in the lives of Prescott and his family after his mom’s passing.

Her death will surely weigh heavily on Prescott as the Cowboys prepare for Sunday night’s game against the Vikings in Minnesota. Prescott’s status on whether he’ll play in the game is questionable due to a strained right calf.

Ebarb’s passing is the latest adversity Prescott has endured over the last two years, a span that has included him battling depression, the loss of his middle brother Jace to suicide in the spring of 2020 and sustaining a fractured ankle last October, causing him to miss the final 11 games of the season.

In what can only be described as an unusual coincidence, Ebarb’s passing comes six games into the season with the Cowboys at 5-1 after the bye week, just as they were during Prescott’s rookie season when one the first heartwarming stories about the young quarterback went viral after he led the Cowboys to a 5-1 record at the bye.

Prescott captured the heart of the nation by bypassing a late-night television show appearance and an overseas endorsement opportunity to go home to Louisiana and spend time with his grandma.

“It’s football and family,” Prescott said. “That’s what I focus on. If I have time to get away and spend time with my family that I’m not going to get to do for awhile that I haven’t done for a while. I’m going to take advantage of it. It’s more important to me to spend time with my family than go with those deals.

“One of them was a late-night show with somebody. Another one was out of country and that was definitely no. Those deals with be there. If they really want it bad enough, they will find a way.”
