Cowboys fans face up to costly air travel for NRL grand final

The Cowboys are riding their way to the NRL grand final on an incredible journey.

But for fans who want to make the trip south it's proving costly with return flights nearing $1,000.

"It's funny how the prices seem to double the moment the fulltime siren sounds, the prices of airlines," Cowboys Coach Paul Green said.

"I understand they are commercial operators too, they have businesses to run, but I think its a bit more than coincidental."

With two interstate teams vying for the title this year, 40,000 fans from Queensland and Victoria are expected to make their way to Sydney for the game.

Storm fans will pay around $300 to $400 for the round trip between Melbourne and Sydney.

But for the Cowboys faithful, flights south will set them back quite a bit more.

The cheapest return flights at the moment out of Townsville are around $800, while some carriers are charging more than $1,000.

Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter says it is outrageous.

"To stop people from Townsville getting to the grand final is un-Australian," Mr Katter said.

Brian Canavan, the NRL's head of football, hopes people are able to pay a bit more to get to see their team try and make history.

"I'm sure they're breaking open their piggy banks to support their team, they're very fanatical up there [in North Queensland]," he said.

The NRL is anticipating a big crowd, even without a Sydney team representing.

"We don't use the word guarantee, it's too early in the week to say that but it will sell out," Canavan said.

In the past 16 years there's been two grand finals which haven't featured a Sydney side, with crowds for those games averaging 81,183.
