Cowboys Coach Mike McCarthy Diagnosed With Appendicitis, Will Have Surgery

Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy has been diagnosed with acute appendicitis and is scheduled to have surgery Wednesday afternoon, the team announced. McCarthy was experiencing abdominal pain earlier in the day that warranted further evaluation.

He is expected to be released from the hospital Wednesday and is anticipated to return before Week 14’s Sunday night game against the Eagles. Dallas’s coordinators will run practice until McCarthy returns.

“You think that tough Irishman is gonna miss this game? We certainly expect him to be rocking by gameday,” Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn told reporters, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota

McCarthy, 60, is in the midst of his 17th season as an NFL coach and has led the Cowboys to a 9–3 mark going into Week 14. Playing a divisional game against the NFC’s No. 1 seed, the Cowboys need McCarthy on the sideline this weekend.

The last time these two teams met, Philadelphia beat Dallas 28–23 in Week 9. The Cowboys will get their shot at revenge on Sunday Night Football with kickoff slated for 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.
