FRISCO, Texas _ Tony Romo has been cleared to practice with the team. That doesn't mean he'll be a full participant this week, but it's a step in the right direction.
Coach Jason Garrett said Monday that they have not determined how much Romo will do this week but the veteran quarterback is expected to do more.
"We're really just taking his situation day by day," Garrett said. "He had two good days last week. Hopefully that can continue. We'll see how it goes over the next few days."
Romo hasn't played this season after being injured in the Cowboys' third preseason game on Aug. 25. He suffered a compression fracture to the L1 vertebrae, and his recovery time was projected at 8-10 weeks.
Romo increased his workload last week, doing individual drills as well as 7 on 7 and 11 on 11 scout-team work.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Sunday that he didn't know if Romo would be active for next Sunday's game at Pittsburgh.
"He will do more [this week]," Jones said. "And he's really doing things that are strong relative to last year's strength. He's ahead of last year."
