Cowboys aim to halt Titans Qld NRL double

Scott Drinkwater hopes the Cowboys can clinch their first NRL win of 2021 against the Gold Coast. (AAP)

Gold Coast will look to complete a Sunshine State NRL double in consecutive weeks when they take on North Queensland in round three.

Optimism has replaced pessimism at the new-look Titans, as marquee off-season signings look to spur the team towards a first finals berth in five years.

The Titans sit 1-1 so far in 2021, with last weekend's 28-16 home victory over local rivals Brisbane following on from a loss to the Warriors in round one.

Justin Holbrook's men meet a wounded Cowboys (0-2) outfit on Sunday in Townsville hoping for consecutive victories over state rivals.

For the Cowboys, a dismal start to the season, compounded by the loss of co-captains Jason Taumalolo (hand) and Michael Morgan (shoulder), spells worrying signs in the north.

But fullback Scott Drinkwater insists - despite back-to-back losses against Penrith and St George Illawarra playing on their minds - the Cowboys have a good opportunity to bounce back in front of their own fans.

"It's in the back of your mind that we're still losing games," he said.

"We haven't had a good couple of seasons and you can tell that's probably still taking a toll on every loss.

"To start the year off with two losses isn't ideal but we have a good chance Sunday, back at our home ground.

"We didn't do it justice last week with good support, so we're hoping we can put the jersey on this week, go out there and give it our all, not just for ourselves but for North Queensland."

Both sides will be missing a key member of their halves pairings, with the Titans slotting Tanah Boyd in to replace Ash Taylor (hand).

"He's their key playmaker on his day and he's very skilful," Drinkwater said of Taylor.

"But we're not really looking into who's in and who's out, we're just going there to play our roles, do our sets and play to the game plan.

"(The Titans) are upbeat, energetic and showed some pretty good defence against the Broncos, forcing a lot of errors.

"They'll be looking to come up here and cement their spot as the top side in Queensland."
