A builder who took £300,000 from four families and left their homes in ruins has been jailed for nine months.
Tony Mottram’s victims had to pay £200,000 extra to finish the work he botched. He left loft conversions without roofs and live wires hanging from ceilings, St Albans crown court, Herts, heard.
A wall he left unadjoined fell down and injured a homeowner, and he conned a victim out of a holiday.
Carla Claydon, 44, of St Albans, said: “He told us he needed to say goodbye to his dying father in Spain. We paid for his holiday. His father lived in Stevenage.”
Mottram, 45, of Royston, Herts, pleaded guilty to engaging in commercial practice with misleading or false information.
He was also disqualified from being a company director for seven years.
