'Cowardly' thug stalks blind woman before pushing her over and snatching money in CCTV

A “callous and cowardly” thug who followed a blind woman as she walked through a city’s streets before robbing her in broad daylight has been jailed.

The victim, a woman in her 40s, was walking through Coventry with her white stick when she was tailed by Steven Ball, 42.

As she walked through an underpass he pushed her and grabbed her coat before rifling through the pockets and fleeing with £25.

CCTV footage showed Ball running from the scene on March 15.

Two passersby recognised Ball and he was arrested at his home address in Adelaide Street, Coventry, later that day.

Although he denied the offence, Ball was also picked out in an ID parade by two witnesses.

Ball pleaded guilty to robbery at Coventry Crown Court and has now been jailed for three years.

PC James Rees, of West Midlands Police, said: “This was an absolutely callous and cowardly act which has hugely affected the victim.

“It has completely dented her confidence, leaving her struggling to sleep.

“She is far more cautious about going outside on her own and has to rely on others around her.

“I hope she is comforted to know her assailant is behind bars.”
