Cow urine, claimed to be licensed by FSSAI, goes viral over social media: Here's what health ministry says

In response to viral reports claiming the marketing of FSSAI licensed bottled cow urine, the Union Health Ministry has released a statement.

"An image circulating on #WhatsApp claims that FSSAI (Food Safety & Standards Authority of India) marked cow urine is being bottled and sold in the market #PIBFactCheck This claim is #fake! @fssaiindia has not issued any license for this product," a warning message from FSSAI, Union Health Ministry and PIB Fact Check has been shared on X (formerly Twitter).

"ALERT!!! This is found circulating in some WhatsApp and digital media channels. THIS IS FAKE! The license number has NOT BEEN GIVEN BY FSSAI," the Health Ministry warned users through its WhatsApp Channel.

FSSAI or the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India is the apex body in the country that regulates the standard of food.

Cow urine has been surrounded by various myths, particularly in traditional and alternative medicine practices. One common myth is that cow urine can cure all diseases, including serious conditions like cancer and diabetes. However, there is no scientific evidence to support these claims. While cow urine does contain some nutrients and bioactive compounds, it is not a miracle cure.

Another myth is that cow urine has no side effects and is completely safe for consumption. In reality, cow urine can contain harmful bacteria and toxins, which may cause infections or other health issues if consumed without proper purification. It is crucial to approach the use of cow urine with caution and skepticism, particularly when it is promoted as a cure-all.

Some believe that cow urine can enhance fertility and sexual health. Again, there is a lack of scientific evidence to support these assertions. Relying on cow urine for such purposes may delay seeking effective medical treatments.

While cow urine is used in certain traditional practices and may have some antiseptic properties, it is essential to rely on scientifically proven treatments for serious health conditions. Consulting with healthcare professionals and relying on evidence-based medicine is the safest and most effective approach to maintaining health.
