Cow & Gate recall batch of baby food after 'insects discovered in it'

A major baby food company has recalled tens of thousands of packets of banana muesli after reports people have "found insects in them".

Tens of thousands of packets of Cow & Gate's Sunny Start My First Banana Muesli, made for babies aged 10 months and over, were recalled on a “precautionary basis”, a statement on the Food Standards Agency’s website said.

“This product is not suitable for consumption because the presence of foreign bodies such as insect,” said the statement.

“Cow & Gate has recalled the affected batch, notified its customers and displayed point-of-sale recall notices in stores,” it added.

Nineteen complaints over moth larvae in the food were received from across the UK, a Cow & Gate spokesman, Helen Messenger, told the Telegraph, leading to 19,000 packets being recalled.

The company apologised and warned parents not to give their children the muesli, which has a best before date of 27 September 2016.

One customer tweeted a photo of a soiled Cow & Gate muesli product earlier this month, after discovering a “spider''s web” and "maggot” inside it:

Cow & Gate said they received a “small number of complaints” about the batch of muesli and none of its other products were affected.

The company said: “We are very sorry that this has happened and can assure you that an immediate investigation has been initiated at our factory.”
