Cow & Gate baby food urgently recalled over fears it may contain rubber

Cow & Gate is urgently recalling jars of baby food over fears they may contain pieces of rubber.

The baby food company said fragments of a thin blue rubber glove have been found in some jars of its Cheesy Broccoli Bake, made for babies over the age of 10 months.

On Monday, an urgent recall notice was issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) which said the rubber would “make this product unsafe to eat.”

Cow & Gate explained that while the product “does not pose a health risk” it is recalling the products because they “do not meet our usual high-quality standards.”

In a statement, the company said: “Nothing is more important to us than the safety and quality of our products.

”We are sorry this has happened and would like to reassure parents that this is an isolated incident.“

Cheesy Broccoli Bake 250g jars are currently sold in a number of major supermarkets, including Asda, Boots, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, and Tesco.

The recalled batch of baby food affected has code 28122020 and a best before date of 28/12/2020.

Cow & Gate has advised customers not to feed the affected jars of food to babies and instead return it to the store where it was bought.

Customers can return the product, with or without a receipt, for a full refund.

Last month, American toymaker Fisher-Pricerecalled nearly five million baby sleepers after they were linked to dozens of infant deaths.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission urged customers to stop using the Rock ’n Play sleeper “immediately” following reports of more than 30 fatalities over a decade.

The babies died after rolling over onto their stomach or side while unrestrained in the product, a padded cradle that vibrates to help them drop off to sleep.
