Covid will get worse before it gets better, say doctors

The coronavirus pandemic will get worse before it gets better as cases rise dramatically and the NHS faces "unprecedented pressure", leading medics have warned.

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges urged people to remain cautious ahead of the planned easing of restrictions in England on July 19, the BBC reported. Confirmation of the plans is expected on Monday.

The academy, which represents 23 medical bodies responsible for training and development, said there was "little doubt that things will get worse before they get better", warning over routine care being postponed as health workers self-isolate, the backlog of elective procedures and the increase in long Covid cases.

The academy said: "There is no doubt that we will get to a position when this dangerous and erratic disease is largely under control for the population as a whole and we can 'learn to live with' Covid-19.

"However, we are not in that position yet and sadly, we have to expect things to get worse again."

Measures expected to be eased from July 19 include an end to the quarantine requirement for fully vaccinated UK residents arriving in England from amber list countries, and the axing of the coronavirus "bubble" system in schools.

The legal requirement to wear face masks is also set to be axed, as well as the rule of six in private homes and the limits on guests at weddings and funerals.
