Covid wave in young children and teenagers as rates highest in Scotland - full list

Coronavirus is ripping through school-age youngsters in Scotland, according to the latest Scottish Covid figures.

Infection rates are currently the highest among young children under the age of 14 for both girls and boys.

Public Health Scotland data has revealed that in the week beginning October 11, the rate of positive cases per 100,000 population in the 0 to 14 age group was 479.3 in boys and 500.1 in girls.

A total of 4,208 Covid infections were reported in this age group during this period - which accounts for around 28% of confirmed positive cases for the whole of Scotland in those seven days.

Health officials identified a total of 17,431 cases of coronavirus across the country in that week.

Current infection rates were also high in 15 to 19-year-olds, 25 to 44-year-olds and 45 to 64-year-olds.

The latest figures come after secondary pupils were told to continue to wear face coverings in class in Scotland.

A more cautious approach is being taken, advised by clinicians including chief medical officer Dr Gregor Smith, to provide ample time for 12 to 15 years olds to take up their first dose of vaccination.

Yesterday, the Scottish Government confirmed that experts are keeping a close eye on the so-called ‘Delta Plus’ strain of the virus.

Nicola Sturgeon said that it is being closely monitored after a rise in infections, as she pleaded with people to practice good personal hygiene.

Early figures show that the AY.4.2 variant accounts for 6% of current infections.

The strains has not yet been considered a Variant of Concern or a Variant Under Investigation by health officials.

The First Minister tweeted: “The need to monitor this was discussed @Scotgov cabinet earlier.

“More generally, cases here - though lower than a few weeks ago - remain higher than we’d like.

“So please take care: wear masks, wash hands, ventilate indoor spaces and get vaccinated.”

The latest Scottish Government data shows that just over 48% have received their first jab.
