Covid vaccine update: NHS to prepare for mass roll from 1 December

The NHS will prepare for a roll out of mass coronavirus vaccinations from 1 December.

Preliminary analysis has shown that a vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech can prevent more than 90 per cent of people from getting Covid-19.

Nicola Sturgeon welcomed the news which she said offered a "light at the end of the tunnel" for Scots.

There are plans for ten million doses to be delivered to the UK by end of the year if the vaccine is given regulatory approval, reports the Telegraph.

The public will need two doses each for the the vaccine to work effectively, with UK already ordered 40 million doses.

Speaking in the Commons on Tuesday, UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: "If this or any other vaccine is approved, we will be ready to begin a large-scale vaccination programme.

"We do not yet know whether or when a vaccine is approved, but I have tasked the NHS with being ready from any date from 1 December."

However, the majority of the vaccine roll out is not expected to be until the first part of 2021.

Similar to the winter flu vaccine, those who qualify first for the vaccine will be decided by the independent Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).

Age is the biggest priority for people who need the vaccine first, with those who live and work in care homes top of the list, followed by those aged over 80 and all health and social care workers - including NHS doctors and nurses.
