Covid vaccine UK: Third jab set for approval next week but arrival delayed by Brexit

A third Covid-19 vaccine is set to be approved for use in the UK next week but its arrival will be delayed due to Brexit.

The UK Government has ordered seven million doses of the Moderna vaccine, which has already been approved by regulators in the EU and US.

However, it won't be available in the UK until April because the UK is no longer part of the EU, reports the Guardian.

Clinical trials suggest the Moderna vaccine has an efficacy of 94 per cent, similar to that of the Pfizer vaccine which is currently being rolled out across the UK.

A fourth vaccine set to get UK approval within weeks is the so-called "Janssen vaccine", manufactured by American pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson, which the UK Government has already bought 30 million doses of.

Unlike the Pfizer and Oxford vaccines, which both require two doses, this vaccine can be administered in a single jab.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon revealed the Scottish Government aims to vaccinate all over 80-year-olds in the next four weeks as coronavirus cases continue to surge.

Speaking at Thursday's daily coronavirus briefing, the First Minister said: "In addition, the programme for vaccinating old people over the age of 80 is underway, all over 80-year-olds will be starting to get appointments either by phone or by letter.
